Made a little weekend run to Louisiana with sight casting buddy Rusty Hook for a guided trip with Miles Larose (@Shallowsouth on Instagram).  Had a great trip, even though we were far short of our 25 fish day back in April of 2015. Saturday was the first day and though it was clear and pretty, … More Dog Fly Morning, Spoon Afternoon

I hope my title doesn’t offend any “Pastafarian’s” but I couldn’t resist.  I attended the Fly Fair of the Gulf Coast Council of the IFFF in Ocean Springs this past summer.  It was a great event and I just love that it is in Ocean Springs, MS, near my redfish patch.  Unfortunately the timing makes … More Defeating the “Flying Spaghetti Monster”

Talking about the Samurai system doesn’t seem to always get my message across, so this weekend I put my new GoPro to work to try and capture the system in action.  Its hard enough solo fishing with a fly rod in a kayak with the wind “helping” me every chance it gets, but the videographer … More See the Fish, Catch the Fish

I just got back from a trip to southern Louisiana with a friend, booked with a popular and well-known guide.  The guide had called to let my friend Rusty Hook know about a cancellation and the fact that conditions might be favorable (sun in the forecast) for sight casting to big bulls .  The big … More Winter Bulls

Recent back-to-back trips to Venice for big redfish and to Andros, Bahamas for bonefish gave me a unique comparsion of fly fishing for the two different species. All sight casters are accustomed to getting excited instructions from the guides when stalking a fish, but until the bonefish trip I wasn’t aware of the differences in … More One Fish, Two Fish, Redfish, Bonefish

“Twelve o’clock, 300 feet” guide Miles Larose shouted. Three hundred feet!  My first thought was “did I hear him right?”.  I’m accustomed to hearing 30 feet, 50 feet, even 70 feet, but 300!  Our guide was teaching us something new.  We were fishing Pass a Loutre out of Venice, LA and we were one day … More Push at Twelve o’clock… 300 feet…

This is one of six I caught Tuesday.  Sorry about the sun in the background, the GoPro doesnt know any better. But if it looks like I have a halo around my head, the angels WERE singing when I caught this one… The wind was horrible, the nearby gauge history shows 8 meters per second.Roughly, … More The birds saved it…

For many years, scuba diving was my primary sport.  In scuba diving, “vis” is the word.  Short for visibility, the “vis” is expressed in feet.  Thirty feet of vis means you can see approximately thirty feet.  Of course, the current “vis” is always someone’s  opinion.  One diver’s thirty foot of visibility was another diver’s twenty … More Turbidity, a “cloudy” but Important Metric

On my marsh trips I have been getting disgusted with the number of fish that spook when the fly hits the water. Of course how close you cast to a redfish is inversely proportional to his size. The bigger the fish the closer you can cast without risking spooking the fish, the smaller the fish, … More Match the “push button” hatch
