The late evening midge hatch is busted now that I have a pattern that seems to satisfy the bream that it is the same as whatever is hatching. A Griffiths Gnat in size 18 is the ticket. (See it in his mouth)
Gulf Coast Classic Fly Fishing Festival
Chris and I fooled a nice gobbler into range of Chris’ Jellyhead choke (45yards) and Chris made a nice shot. I was there but this was Chris’ bird, from the vision, strategy, and final shot I was just the spectator. Today the mentor became the mentee, I knew this day would come.
Cold spell moved in and I expected the fish to be clammed up but a few were hungry for the UV Ant I was casting.
Tied a little UV Ant with a bead and caught bream, catfish and crappie. The fish were on fire everywhere and they loved the ant.
Went out tonight between 7:00 and 7:30 (time change) and i was thinking cold (49F) and windy, it’ll be a bust. Deer hunters know if its windy the wind will usually lay down just before dark. Sure enough, the wind laid down and I started seeing rises on the pond. It was too cold for mosquitoes so I don’t know what they were hitting, midges maybe, but they started taking my skeeter. Slower than it has been but I landed 4 nice ones before it was too dark to fish. My mosquito looks just like an adult blood midge, Chironomid Attenuatus, so it’s really a great little fly because it works on both hatches.
I matched the Wing color of the adult Hexagenia bilineata mayfly to Krystal Flash using my phone. Do you think I got it? For the longest time i was tying mayflies in a dun color but then it occurred to me that duns are only on the water at night and they later fall on the water as a husk. I’ve never seen a fish mistake a husk and eat it. Thanks to this old photo of a little male that was hanging on a vine i was able to match the wing color. Now I’m hoping that female spinners have the same color, something else to check out.I have some old photos to look through.
The May popper for bream on the Rez. Doesn’t look like much but a lot of work went on in coming up with the best offering for bream blitzing on Mayflies and this was my best producer.
Tonight I took my vintage Orvis full-flex 4 wt to the ponds and between 6 and 6:30 i had a ball with my mosquito pattern. Caught 8 absolute brutes like this and they were bending my rod double. My kind of fun!
Mosquitos are looking better. I’m not good at following the proportion rules and I never seem to be able to match the hackle to the hook gap. Albert suggested that size 12 was large for a mosquito but I know I’ve seen some 12’s on my arm if not some size 8’s! (It is Mississippi after all.)
