My oldest brother Don owns and operates Breambugs.com and he has told me over the years that the Ligon Breamkiller has always been the best selling fly that he sells. It’s a simple fly, available in six colors but black and white appears to sell the best. Don started including a data sheet with Ligon orders to help his customers be successful with that particular fly, which I am publishing here.
There are two ways to fish the Ligon Bream Killer. First, with a floating fly line and
a sinking leader. Keep in mind that the Ligon Bream Killer sinks slowly, it is
designed that way, so be patient. Cast and wait, let the fly sink. After a few
seconds strip the line slowly. If the fish are deeper, again, take your time. You
can always add a little weight to the fly to cause it to sink faster and deeper. Two
of our other popular sinking flies that are very similar to the Ligon Bream Killer are
the Swamp Spider, it is weighted, and the Spider-Bugger. The second way the
Ligon Bream Killer is successfully used is as a trailing fly on a Popper/Dropper Rig.
The idea is to attach a popper to your leader, hook size 4 or 6, and tie a 20-inch
leader to the hook of the popper then tie a Ligon Bream Killer to the trailing end
of the leader. The popper acts as a strike indicator, when the fish takes the Ligon
Bream Killer the popper moves to allow you to set the hook. It also lets you know
if the fish are taking sinking flies or topwater poppers. It is not unusual to catch
two fish on one cast. You can make your own Popper/Dropper Rig or you can use
our Miskito Coast Popper/Dropper Rig, we have them already tied using Quick
Change Snaps to allow you to easily change flies without cutting the line. We
have three different Miskito Coast Popper/Dropper Rigs available, one is an 8-
pound test, one is a 10-pound test and the other one is a 17-pound test. The 8
and 10-pound test are great for bluegill and the 17-pound test is great for Bass.
You may wonder why we use the stiffer 8 and 17-pound test lines. The stiffer
leader helps keep the two flies from tangling while casting. You may also be
wondering why we suggest the popper have a #4 or #6 hook. The popper needs
to be large enough to prevent the Ligon Bream Killer from pulling the popper
underwater. The Ligon Bream Killer has been, and still is, our number one best-
selling fly on our website for 18 years, why? Because it catches fish!
Ligon Bream Killers are available in 6 different colors and 5 different hook sizes
and can be found under Ligon Bream Killers on the BreamBugs website.
Miskito Coast Popper/Dropper Rigs are available in 3 sizes and can be found
under Popper/Dropper Rigs on the BreamBugs website.
